THE initial major yarding of new season lambs commenced at Hamilton on Wednesday with a yarding of 23,500 along with 2200 shorn lambs and 3000 sheep.
The overall quality was very good although there was a tail of lighter immature lambs, however, they were showing freshness. The offering of sheep provided most weights and grades. A full field of processors were present, including both supermarkets, some processors were not fully active. Feeder and restocker competition were evident.
The keenest competition was for the good heavy lambs 26kg plus but overall lambs to the trade were softer by $5 to $10 per head over most categories and competition was erratic. New season lambs sold to $162p/hd with most new season lambs realising between 410 and 490c/kg cwt with the very odd pen of top lambs to 520c/kg cwt. Light 12 to 16kg new season lambs sold from $43 to $69p/hd with lambs to the trade 18 to 22kg selling from $75 to $133p/hd and 22 to 26kg from $96 to $155p/hd.
Very good shorn trade lambs 18 to 26kg were realising between 380 and 410c/kg cwt with top shorn lambs making to $137/head with medium weight shorn lambs 22 to 26kg making from $92 to $137 with the Hoggets topping at $70p/hd.
An additional new exporter this week witnessed the sheep price increase generally around $5p/hd or so for the heavy sheep. Heavy crossbred ewes sold to $35 with Merino Ewes to $44 and Merino wethers to $37p/hd. The general run of good mutton realising between 80 and 150c/kg cwt. Rams sold from $4 to $13p/hd.
