THE Surry District Tennis Association kicked off season 2021-22 on Saturday, with both Tyrendarra and Lawn Purple registering comfortable wins in A grade.
Tyrendarra were the victors over Lawn Blue at Tyrendarra, in what initially looked like a tight contest, before Tyrendarra were able to get on a roll.
Tyrendarra’s stocks were boosted by the inclusion of Marcus McClintock and Hannah Jones, youngsters who have been promoted from A reserve.
McClintock and Dan Polkinghorne got Tyrendarra off to a good start, defeating Lawn Blue’s Chris Thomas and Craig Keenan 8-3 in the first set.
Verity McDonald and Brooke King then got one back for Lawn, 8-6 over Amy Orchard and Jones, but that was as good as it got for the away side, with Tyrendarra winning every remaining set to finish comfortable 5-47 to 1-30 winners.
McClintock and Polkinghorne played well for the Darras, not dropping a set, while King was Lawn Blue’s best, winning 19 games.
Lawn Purple v Heywood
Last season’s runner-up, Lawn Purple, are showing early signs of being a force in the SDTA’s A grade competition once again this year.
They got the ball rolling on Saturday, with a 6-48 to 0-21 thumping of Heywood at Heywood’s home court.
The closest Heywood came to winning a set was in the third, in which Austin Sadler and Rebecca Siddall won six games, but were still beaten by Cam McCallum and Kerri-Ann O’Keefe.
Sadler managed to win 15 of his games, and Kane Mueller was able to win 10 for Heywood, fighting hard against what was an inevitable result by the end of play.
