Drafting Day

THE Hamilton Campdraft has been run and won with locals just missing out on claiming the major prizes.

Campdraft secretary, Nikky McMahon said it was a positive event with plenty of variety in the results.

“It was really good, it all ran smoothly and went well,” she said.

“It was a bit of a mixture, we had our Victorian Championship Open which was won by Toby White, Lauren Jackson won our Ladies and there was a run-off for our restricted shoot-out, so it was quite varied.

“Overall, the calibre of horses and people was really good and it was typical south-west weather, it was pretty warm one day, then it got windy.

“The night weather was good though.”

This year’s event returned to the traditional February window after COVID restrictions forced the 2021 event to be contested in April.

McMahon said the preference is earlier in the year and was glad to return to the usual schedule.

“We prefer to run this time of year, because our grounds get too wet the later it gets,” she said.

“Last year when we ran in April, it was a bit touch and go, so we definitely prefer to run this time of year.”

The return to the earlier time and the work behind the scenes led to one of the best campdrafts yet.

“From our end, it is one of the most seasmless events we have ran,” McMahon said.

“Now that it is done, we look forward to the 2023 event.

“Just a massive thanks to the sponsors as well, the help they give to transport the stock makes it so much easier for us.”
