THE Johnny Mullagh Championship Cup was played out at the weekend, continuing the March long weekend tradition in Harrow.
The Glenelg XI improved its already impressive record, once again accounting for the Mullagh XI, with an unbeaten century the highlight in a high-scoring contest played on the Johnny Mullagh Reserve.
Former Australian Test captains, Steve Waugh and Graham Yallop, were also in attendance and Harrow Discovery Centre manager, Josie Sangster said it was another successful day of fun and education.
“The day was absolutely incredible, what I like about the game is the blackfellas coming and getting into the spirit of it,” she said.
“They brought some really handy cricketers with them as well.
“The day started early at 8am with Steve Waugh at the (discovery) centre.
“He did do the toss, we got a shirt made for him and for Graham as well.”
Graham Yallop presented the trophy at the end of the game and has already expressed interest at returning again next year.
It wasn’t just the senior game which drew the attention of the large crowd, with some new additions to the junior activities in the morning.
“We also had a classic catch competition for kids and also a Mullagh maximum hit as well,” Sangster said.
“The Dragons brought 60 kids this year which is more than previous years.
“The weather was amazing, the crowd loved all the activities and it was just a great day.”
The weekend also got a shoutout from 2021 Mullagh Medal winner, Scott Boland, with the bowler recording a video from Pakistan sending his best wishes to those in attendance.
Sangster said planning was already underway for next year’s event with the range of activities set to expand once again.
