Memorial success on Dunkeld greens

ANOTHER successful day was had at Dunkeld Bowling Club, as teams took to the green for the sixth annual Edna and Ian McFarlane Memorial Day March 22.

A full field of 16 teams played three bowl triples with three games of 10 ends the format.

The trio of Max Spiller, Gerard Lucas and Alma Astbury topped the leaderboard, holding off Tom Storer, Ray Fary and Doreen Edwards, who finished second.

Event organiser, Gary Wall said conditions were ideal and everyone had an enjoyable day on the green.

“It was a wonderful day, it was overcast but there was no wind,” he said.

“It was great conditions for bowling, everyone had a fantastic day.

“Most of the organisation was done by Cathryn Levett and myself, we have done it for the past few years.”

The top two teams finished the day as three game winners, while there were quite a few two-game winners across the day as well.

Wall said most of the players came from outside the Dunkeld club, giving them a chance to play with and against different people to their usual events.

“We only had four or five locals, most of the others came from Balmoral, Hamilton, Grangeburn and other clubs,” he said.

“We don’t have any trouble filling it, it is very popular.

“It will be on again next year at around the same time.”

While the day is a relaxed environment, Wall said there was still a competitive element to the event.

“Everyone likes to get their name on the shield, but it is a good light-hearted day and is always played in good spirits,” he said.
