Local sharpshooters medal at nationals

A LOCAL shooting star continues to impress, returning from the Australian Clay Target Association National Trap Championships in Wagga Wagga with two wins and three other podium finishes.

Harry Brown topped the ranks in the Sub Juniors (Under-15) section and the Double Rise Championship, while finishing second in the single barrel and point score events and third in the champion of champions.

The 14-year-old said it was great to test himself against others he wouldn’t normally compete against.

“There was a lot more in the sub junior category up in Wagga, compared to Echuca (state titles),” he said.

“I possibly thought I was a chance at getting a medal, but I just wanted to shoot well.

“Thanks to Garry Hayden, he does SWAS (South West Academy of Sport) and he coaches us a fair bit when he sees us at shoots.”

Brown has been shooting for about 12 months and also impressed at the South Australian titles in February, winning the double barrel for Under-18s, the A grade double barrel and the handicap event.

He also had success at the Victorian titles in December, claiming the Overall High Gun Championships for Sun Juniors (Under-15), Sub Juniors (Under-15) Champion of Champions, the Under-15 single and double barrel and handicap event honours.

With just 12 months since he took up shooting, he has certainly got the attention of many in the region, along with his sister, Jordy, who also competed at the nationals.

The 17-year-old also returned with a medal and said just being apart of such a prestigious event was beneficial.

“I got third in the double barrel for C grade,” she said.

“I just went up there with the aim of having fun and gaining experience and talk to everyone there, because there was a lot of professionals and former Olympians.”

Jordy said she learnt lots and was looking forward to putting the tips into action at local shoots in future.

“It was good just to talk to others and I finished third overall for the week as well,” she said.

“A lot of the people gave me tips and most importantly how to stand and things like that.

“A big thank you to Hamilton Golf Club, we both started shooting there and they have helped a lot.”
