Nicola wins Victorian Late Model Sedan title

WESTERN Speedway hosted the Late Model Sedan Championship in front of a record crowd, as Traralgon’s Peter Nicola added another title win to his resume on Sunday.

Nicola came from third on the grid to take the win, with Chevy Edwards taking out second place ahead of Domain Ramsey, who started from pole position.

Edwards and Tasmanian, Brad Smith, provided plenty of excitement, putting on an epic battle, swapping fourth and fifth positions until in the closing stages of the race, Edwards got the better of the tussle and charged forward rounding up Ramsey in the process, to take out second spot.

Smith and Wayne Belk eventually filled the final spots on the podium.

Edwards was also the very deserving winner of the Hard Charger Award.

Support events from the Standard Saloons, Limited Sportsman and Production Sedans provided plenty of excitement with the Limited Sportsman Feature going to Jock Baker, with Andrew Wilson in second place and Katelyn Worthy in third.

The Production Sedan final saw Benny Barker triumphant, followed by Steven Aldridge and Ryan Queale.

It was an all Portland show for the Standard Saloon Final with Chris Carvill taking the win ahead of Nathan Hutchins and Sam Dunn.

To round out the program, the Vintage Rods and Sedans put on some great demonstration events, which are always popular with both the young and older patrons.

The main event was the moment that many of the crowd had been waiting for, as the Great Caravan Race competitors rolled out onto the track.

Plenty of action followed, with the award for the “Most Entertaining Drive” going to local driver, Steven Linke, in the 88 Machine, while the winner was Portland Auto Wreckers P1 entry driven by Terry Wilson, with Matt Domburg in the P30 machine, while third place went to Peter Leonard in P99.

With the final flag dropping for this season at Western Speedway, the committee is already planning for the 2022-23 season, with a varied and entertaining program of events already on the cards.

The committee thanks the many volunteers and supporters for their efforts again this season.
