FISHING
AXL O’Brien and Brian Murrell are the toasts of the Casterton Angling Society’s 2021/22 Season, taking out six annual trophies between them, including the junior and senior aggregates, respectively.
While numbers at competitions varied from week-to-week, a team of happy anglers turned out for the club’s annual presentation day at its home ground, the Angling Block.
O’Brien’s major trophy came courtesy of a total 1.1744 kilograms of fish caught for the season, the major trophy accompanied by another for the heaviest carp.
Murrell took home 12 weekly trophies for the season and a total 23.325 kilograms of fish for his aggregate prize and an additional three trophies for heaviest redfin, snapper and whiting caught this season.
Brett Murrell collected first prize for his heaviest trout of the season, Terry Sealey took out heaviest bream and Axl’s brother, Sid, was also in the winner’s circle after landing the heaviest estuary perch for the year.
Club president, Belinda O’Brien, thanked the many business sponsors for the yearly awards. The club will be back in action again with competitions beginning in September 2022.
CROQUET
WE HAD quite an enjoyable afternoon on the courts on Saturday.
Six senior players decided to play and make the most of the fine weather.
In game one, Sandra playing two balls took on Heather and Yvonne.
This game, although being a bit one-sided, took a long while to finish, with both teams using many strategies before each hoop was made.
Sandra came out the eventual winner, 7 to 4.
Game two went to a shoot-out, with Joy playing Jan and Margaret, doing a jump (first ever) to win the hoop and game, 7 to 6.
In game three, Jan playing two balls against Margaret and Joy had a win in another shoot-out, 7 to 6.
A few jumps were made in this game, which makes the win a bit harder to achieve as a jump often makes the nearly impossible, possible, if the jump comes off.
In game four, Yvonne played against Sandra and Heather and came off the court with a good win, 7 to 2.
Sandra must have used up all her good luck in game one. Another enjoyable Saturday afternoon out in the fresh air playing croquet.

WEDNESDAY saw 13 players enjoy a game of stableford at Casterton Golf Club, with Ewan Herring winning on 39 points from our regular visitor, Bandu, on 38 points.
NTPs were Pat Hegarty on the 2nd, with Ewan Herrring winning the 13th and 17th as well as the second shot on the 9th - and didn’t he let us all know about it!
The new works on the course are already showing new growth of grass, so hopefully we will soon be able to get back to playing those holes again.
The NAGA was a runaway win to one of our other visitors, so we will not name him as he has already qualified.
It seems as though the dreaded airey has returned, with one golfer whose wild swing on the seventh failed to connect; the ball was quickly returned to his pocket. There is a planned working bee for the 22nd, so perhaps we can get a few helpers to do some cleaning up.
