Academy squad

THE South West Academy of Sport (SWAS) list for 2022 intake has been finalised with plenty of locals involved in the programs across multiple sports.

With nearly 90 athletes selected for this year’s program, more than 20 locals will take part in sessions ranging from skills to strength and conditioning and other important topics.

Among the locals to be selected is first-time academy member, Olivia Read, who will take part in the hockey program.

The 14-year-old said she had a range of things she hoped to improve during the program.

“Mostly the skill stuff, just want to get better at my game,” she said.

“We have got everything handed to us at the information session at Warrnambool.

“There are some normal hockey stuff then there are group sessions as well.”

Playing in her seventh year, and aside from cricket, hockey is Read’s other main sport.

Read plays as a defender in the local Glenelg Region Hockey Association and said the sport helped build skills which assisted her with other things.

“You get better hand-eye coordination which helps with other things as well,” he said.

The academy has six different sporting programs this year, supporting emerging athletes across the region.

The selected sports include clay target shooting, cycling, golf, hockey, netball, and tennis.

SWAS also supports individual athletes across a range of additional sports, with the Individual Athlete Program boasting a range of high achievers across track and field, cross-country, swimming, cricket, modern pentathlon, sport aerobics, and wheelchair basketball.
