East earns Victorian selection

CAVENDISH lawn bowler, Alison East, has won selection to represent Victoria in the forthcoming Multi Disabilities National Titles to be held at Mermaid Beach Bowling Club on the Gold Coast.

The keen bowler has been a member of the Hamilton Bowling Club, the Balmoral Bowling Club and now calls the Grangeburn Bowling Club home.

East took up the sport back in 2005 when she enjoyed full health and from there she has risen through the ranks to where she is now.

Approximately 10-12 years ago, East started to suffer with Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia (HSP), which is a broad group of inherited, degenerative disorders characterised by impaired walking due to spasticity and weakness of the legs.

“My disability makes my lower legs shake and makes it hard for me to walk,” East said.

“I need to use a cane to walk between ends but sometimes I have to use a walking frame to get from end to end.”

East has not allowed her disability to impair her love of the sport, as she has embraced it and battled through to win her second selection in the Victorian side, having done so back in 2019 for the first time.

“I’m really pleased to be selected for Victoria again and I’m looking forward to the championships,” East said.

In 2019, East won a bronze medal in the singles competition, and will be competing in singles, pairs and triples at this year’s titles.

She has competed three times at the disability championships held in Bendigo each year, and from there has won state team selection twice.

The national titles will get underway on September 30 and will run for six days, keeping East busy with a full schedule of events.
