PORTLAND’S Tighe Warburton has been selected to Western Waves’ under-16s representative squad for the upcoming season, with the cricketer set to face some of the best young talent the state has to offer.
The Waves will face teams from all around both country and metropolitan Victoria, from Gippsland to the North East to Barwon, with Warburton saying it presents a fantastic opportunity for his growth as a player.
“I think the thing I’m most looking forward to is the coaching… it’s the main reason I wanted to take part in it,” Warburton said.
“Getting to learn from them while playing against some quality players will be a good experience for me.”
Despite his age, Warburton has already notched up 65 matches in the Portland and District Cricket Association across under-16s, B grade and A grade over the past seven years.
While he is a capable batsman, he said he was primarily picked to the side for his bowling.
“I think my bowling was the strongest part of my game during the tryouts… hopefully I can show something both with the bat and ball,” he said.
The Waves will be participating in the 2022-23 Youth Premier League season, with their campaign to kick off on November 27 when they take on Central Highlands at Albert Park in Warrnambool.
