AT the conclusion of play on Wednesday, Melbourne Cup Day forcing games to be played a day later than usual, Portland replaced Hamilton at the top of the ladder in division one.
As far as statistics go, 74, 66 and 65 were the high division scores, the average win margin in division one was nine.
Division one, as mentioned, saw Portland at home and defeated Hamilton on all three rinks by a significant margin.
Shirley Rogers d Heather McIntyre, 23-14, and that was the highest score Hamilton recorded across the day.
Kerrie Alexander collected 29 to Jenny Pole’s 13, and Heather Burgess won 22-14 against Elma Astbury.
Overall, it was a comfortable 74-41 win at home for Portland.
The close one of this division was between Grangeburn and Memorial, with the final scores finishing at 55-53.
Leah McCabe 31 d Judy Fasoli 15, Robyn Thomassen 11 lt Marion Husson 14, and Alison East 13 lt June Leahy 24.
Casterton hosted Balmoral and the scores were 46 to the home side and 60 to the visitors.
Nancy Sharam 9 lt Trish Brody 25 Berniece Sullivan 21 d Chick Trotman 18 and Teresa Sealey 16 lt Nettie Tinning 17.
The ladder reads Portland 63, Hamilton 58, Memorial 51, Balmoral 34, Grangeburn 28 and Casterton with six points.
Division 2
THIS division saw only one ladder change near the bottom and had another two-shot win.
It was again to Grangeburn, which is obviously good under pressure, playing Memorial.
Jan Hicks 18 d Pearl Kitt 9, and on the other side of the scorecard Wendy Kosch lost to Memorial’s Meredith Fredericks, 14-21.
The overall loss, would you believe helped Memorial one rung up the ladder.
How could that happen I hear people ask?
Well Hamilton had the bye and as a consequence stayed on 16 points, Memorial got two points and is now on 16 and one shot above Hamilton, -30 and -31.
Portland 42 defeated Macarthur 29, in what was Macarthur’s first game loss.
Val Baker 24 d Jean Schroeder 10, in her first rink loss so far this season.
Jenny Garner 18 to Bev Bourke 19 and still remains undefeated after five games.
Coleraine had a good day alongside Bryans Creek, where the water kept out of the way.
Bowls didn’t for Penshurst though, as the home side rolled up 66 to Penshurst 27.
Therese Nolte d Ann Rentsch, 44-6, and Lesley Beaton’s team held on by a close measure to win 22 to 21.
The ladder shows Macarthur 58, Portland 40, Grangeburn 39, Coleraine 38, Memorial 16, Hamilton 16, and Penshurst with three points.
Division 3
THIS is where there was major upheaval on the ladder on Wednesday.
Portland and Heywood moved up one place each to top and second, while Dartmoor went from top to fourth.
Memorial was at home to Dartmoor and both teams won, denying Dartmoor any points.
Memorial 39 to Dartmoor 34 – T. Watt 18 dw Sue Tregellis 18, and Pauline Breen 21 d Elaine Jones 16.
Portland 61 d Hamilton 26 - Myra Bourke 25 d Doreen Edwards 17, and Joan Cottier and offsiders rolled up 36 to Glenda Porter 9.
Heywood 55 d Casterton 22 - Thelma Hoggan 25 d L. Richards 12, and Dianne Dawson 30 d Helen Lucas 10.
Macarthur at home didn’t allow Grangeburn to get a three from three day, as the home side rolled up 65 to Grangeburn’s 31.
Carole Dunn d K. Coote, 34-15, and Di Cowland 31 to B. Casey 16.
The ladder reads Portland 56 +90, Heywood 56 +57, Macarthur 52, Dartmoor 44, Memorial 39, Casterton 15, Hamilton with nine, just ahead of Grangeburn on the same points with shots required to separate the two.

ON Monday, the start of the women’s state singles took place at Coleraine.
Rain delayed play a bit in the afternoon, but all games were able to be played out.
Heather McIntyre 22 lost to Barb Moore 25; Jenny Pole 4 was no match for Chick Trotman 26, while Carole Dunn 17 fell short of Ann Rentsch 26.
Jan Hamblin 10 lost to Leah McCabe 26, while Robyn Thomassen, who had a bye to the second round, played Leah McCabe and the scores were 25-5.
Sue Tregellis with the other bye played Chick Trotman and the latter won, 25-21.
The round of four will be Moore v Trotman, and Thomassen v Rentsch on Monday again at Coleraine.
