Group runs hit the pavement

THE Portland Runners Club has introduced a Wednesday afternoon running group to inspire some motivation in the community.

The group meets at Nuns Beach every Wednesday at 5.30pm and completes a circuit which can be adapted to suit any age or ability.

Portland Runners Club committee member Dawn Reynolds said the idea was to give people some incentive to go for a run or walk once a week with some different people in the community.

“We wanted to get back into group runs to motivate people to get out there and get moving,” she said.

“We’ll run them every week and hopefully as the group grows it will evolve.

“Each session we’ll have someone from the runners club there to help coordinate to start with but it’s very relaxed and cruisy.”

While the route is 6.8km participants can run as much or as little as they like.

“We’re using the new path that’s been built along the foreshore so we go that way, past the skate park and then over to the canal and around the lagoon and back,” Reynolds said.

“The whole thing is 6.8km but there is no pressure, everyone can run or walk as far as they want and make it their own.

“If you take off the lagoon it turns into 5km or you can just walk or run the foreshore whatever you want.

“We really encourage kids to come along as well, this is welcome to anyone.

“Like parkrun, anyone of any age can have a go, kids can ride their bikes if they want.”

The club will be holding the group runs every week with any updates to be posted on their Facebook page, Portland Runners Club.
