Tigersharks, Shawnee claim division one premiership

PORTLAND Basketball Association’s spring 2022 season came to its conclusion on Sunday, with the grand finalists from all nine senior grades competing at Portland Basketball Stadium for their respective premierships.

Division one women

Table-toppers and strong favourites Shawnee weren’t going to be denied, as they romped to a comfortable win over Tigersharks in their grand final, taking out a 62-45 victory.

Shawnee’s pace in transition was on full display from the outset, as seemingly every time Tigersharks failed to corral the rebound, Shawnee had multiple players out and running looking for transition points.

Add on to that the hot outside shooting of Courtney Gadsden (22 points including four three-pointers) and it was a recipe for a big victory for the favourites.

Gadsden was supported by Meg Schultz (12 points) and Heidi Jones (10 pts) who each helped to keep their opposition at bay.

Tigersharks weren’t without some solid contributors across the board either, as Tyleah Barr led the way with 12 points while also managing the tempo of their offence and pushing the fastbreaks where necessary.

Stella Rogers, Katie Zeunert, Tigrha Cleary and Tiarna Keegan all made their presence felt at various stages, however, it was ultimately a comfortable win for their opposition, with Gadsden taking out the match MVP.

Division one men

The division one men’s grand final saw a hard-fought matchup between two talent-laden teams in Tigersharks Gold and Shawnee Black, with Tigersharks proving to be the stronger side on the day, winning a close encounter 63-54.

The game was played on relatively even terms in the early stages, with Tigersharks gaining the ascendancy thanks to their transition offence spearheaded by the nimble Jack Walsh.

Shawnee weren’t going away though, as athletic duo Sam Peters (18 points for the match) and Flynn Chapman (15 points) looked to impose their will on the game.

Tigersharks held a comfortable 7- to 10-point advantage for most of the contest, however their opposition was able to whittle that down to three points towards the end.

It was at this point when Tigersharks star player Hayden Annett made his presence felt, as his experience, composure and dead-eye shooting came into its own.

Annett finished up with 23 points, including four buckets from long-range, but it was his mid-range game and composure in possession which proved invaluable in a performance which certainly had him in contention for MVP of the match.

However, it was Walsh who deservedly took home the honours, as his 14 points and pace in the open court which had been instrumental in getting his side out to an early lead which they ultimately never fully surrendered.

Shawnee proved far too good in their matchup against Tigersharks Gold, romping to a 66-36 victory in their division two grand final.

The game was mostly quite close in the first half, as five three-pointers from Stella Rogers – who finished with 19 points – helped keep Tigersharks in the game.

Shawnee stamped their authority on this one in the second half, closing out the match with a big 36-10 second half to get themselves over the line comfortably.

While the scoring load was shouldered by Millie Ferguson (21 points) and Lexi Petch (19 points), MVP honours went to Jacci Piergrosse for her work on the interior.

Division two men

Shawnee Black weren’t going to be denied in their division two grand final, as they were able to come away with a solid 59-38 victory over rivals Shawnee Blue.

The game was won in the first half, as Black opened up a 34-17 lead through the scoring of eventual match MVP Charlie Piergrosse (19 points including five threes) along with Flynn Chapman (12 points).

While Blue got a solid performance from Aiden Rogers (13 points), it proved insufficient to get them back into contest after Black’s exceptional long-range shooting earned them the lead.

Division three women

Tigersharks Red were able to get the best of their Tigersharks Gold counterparts in a come-from-behind win in their division three grand final.

Gold led 20-15 at the break thanks to the scoring of Mackenzie Barr (17 points for the match) and Airlie Aldridge (10 points), however Red came into their own in the second portion of the match.

Indiana Rowe led all scorers with 18 points, but it was Petal Phillips (13 points) who would take out MVP honours.

Division three men

There was another comeback story in the division three men’s clash, however on this occasion it was unsuccessful, with Shawnee Gold able to hold on to a four-point victory over Shawnee White, 58-54.

Match MVP Noah Johnson helped Gold get off to a good start, and finished with 19 points, while being assisted by Harrison Looker (16 points) and Kodi Jones (10 points).

However, White weren’t going to go quietly, as Mitch Arnold (28 points) spearheaded a strong fightback which saw them outscore their opposition 28-21 in the second half, but it proved too little too late.

Division four women

In another all-Tigersharks affair, Grey was able to get the best of Gold in a close one, coming away 34-26 victors.

Tiana Richardson led the way scoring-wise for Grey with 10 points and was matched by her Gold counterpart Darcy Lette.

However, it was Grey’s Courtney Hoggan who ultimately took out the MVP honours.

Division four men

Shawnee Black proved too strong for Tigersharks Red in their matchup, coming away 63-42 victors.

Match MVP Jack Prevett led all scorers with 18 points and was assisted by 12 from Kade Wilson.

Meanwhile for the runners-up, Brodie Lucas was their biggest contributor on the scoreboard finishing up with 11 points.

Division five women

Tigersharks Gold proved too good for Beavers Orange in their clash, coming away 32-20 victors.

Sasha Hawthorne led all scorers with 19 points, and also took home MVP honours for her performance.

For Beavers, Tahlia Parsons was their main contributor on the scoreboard, finishing up with 14 of her side’s 20 points.
