Big week of bowls

THE 2022 Club Men’s Pairs were a highlight on the Portland RSL Memorial Bowling Club greens this past Sunday and spectators were treated to a fantastic day of quality bowling.

Ultimately the duo to perform the best on the day were Chris Elford and Geoff Sturzaker.

Ladies Club Singles Championship title is currently underway and was completed yesterday and the winner will be announced in next week’s edition of the Portland Observer.

Weekend Pennant was played on the home green with one of the three RSL teams claiming a win.

Division one was involved in a mighty tug of war with Grangeburn for the duration of the day with the margin often only being a few close shots. Each rink was intensely involved in their own battles.

Ultimately it was Grangeburn managing to break away and produce the win at the end of the day with PRSLM 47 to Grangeburn 54.

Rinks produced the following results: Des Pitts and team going down by a mere two shots, 15 to 17. Greg Hoggan’s team succumbed 15 to 19. Meanwhile Ken Evans team went down by only one single shot 17 to 18.

Division one is currently holding fourth position on the ladder.

Division two in the meantime came up against a very switched on Portland Blue side losing 48 to 66.

Gerry Watt kept his team to task only going down by three shots, scoring a total of 15 to 18 in the last. Leonie Buchanan’s team battled hard but the opposition were too strong producing 27 shots to our 12. Finally, Peter Fasoli led his team through a tight series of ends to produce a draw on the scorecard 21 all.

Division two are also placed fourth on the ladder.

Division three had a resounding win against Coleraine, final scores being 67 to 44.

Tink Imbi and team had a close battle finally winning 16 to 14. Meredith Fredericks led her team to a five-shot win 19 to 14. David Garnier and team had a definitive win putting 32 shots on the scoreboard to the oppositions 16.

Weekday pennant results

Weekday pennant completed its last round to be held before the Christmas break.

Division one welcomed Grangeburn and unfortunately the elements were against the competition taking place with the greens going under water. Therefore, points were shared.

PRSLM now sit third on the ladder which reads Hamilton 111, Portland 108, Memorial 107, Balmoral 77, Grangeburn 51.

Division two made their way to inland Macarthur, the top team on the ladder and after completing only one end, the competition looked ready for abandonment. However, the skies above decided to be forgiving and despite extremely cold summer conditions, and gusty winds testing the delivery of bowls, the full complement of ends was completed. Final score cards revealed Memorial 38 to Macarthur 34.

Pearl Kitt and team went into half time with a deficit however after the break they consistently wore the opposition down and were able to reduce the winning break to five shots. Finals scores on Kitt’s rink were 15 to 19. Leanne Evison’s crew led all day and produced a winning margin of eight, scorecard reading 23 to 15.

The ladder leading into the Christmas break reads Macarthur 76, Portland 74, Coleraine 70, PRSLM 55, Hamilton 51, Penshurst 48, Grangeburn 46.

Division three headed to the opposite end of town to play against Portland where conditions were extremely difficult. Final scores read as Portland 46 to PRSLM 25.

Pauline Breen and team were defeated 33 to 9. Meanwhile Trish Watt led her team to a win in the existing tricky conditions against the home team, winning 16 to 13.

Division three ladder has the following listing: Macarthur 106, Dartmoor 91, Portland 89, Heywood 88, Memorial 67, Grangeburn 56, Casterton 52, Hamilton 11

Please note that the Weekday Pennant will resume once again on Tuesday January 17.

Monthly Invitation Fours

Wednesday saw the Monthly Invitation Fours scheduled in what can only be described as precarious windy conditions. As always some teams cope better with what is thrown at them.

The event was sponsored by Bryden Tyrepower and the prizes were special festive hams from Halliday Butchers. The winners on the day were a combination team skippered by Chris Fleming. Congratulations to Fleming (Port Fairy) and his team of Tony Jackson (Dunkeld), Barry Huppatz (Portland) and Murray Arnold (Port Fairy), who were four game winners and the recipients of the prized hams. Runners-up with also four winning games but less points was skippered by John Wallis. John’s team consisted of Simon Hein (PRSLM), Ian Grayson (Port Fairy) and Graeme Solly (Warrnambool City Memorial) who also took home hams.
