BMX Club celebrates 2022

THE Portland BMX Club celebrated a big year on Sunday, hosting their presentations and annual general meeting.

The day was highlighted with four big contributors to the club earning life memberships.

Current vice-president Tim Thorp and secretary Trudy Thorp were awarded alongside former club president Jacci Piergrosse and member Gavin Piergrosse.

Both families have seen their children move through the sport across the years with Tim Thorp saying it was a nice surprise.

“I didn’t know it was happening on Sunday, I’d heard some whispers but didn’t think it was actually going ahead,” he said.

“It was really nice and for Trudy to get it as well as Jacci and Gavin.

“The club has historically done it with families together because with BMX it’s kind of like once one family member is in you’re all in.”

Other awards were handed out across the day with Jonah Annett claiming the encouragement award while Aaron Gadsden took out the most improved accolade.

The Rider of the Year award went to joint winners Lukas Jones and Atley Sutton and so did the Club Person of the Year award which went to Krystie Jones and Maddy Sutton.

The club also locked in their committee for 2023 with Jeremy Finck taking on the president’s role which was previously held by Roger Middleton who will remain on the committee.

“We’ve got all the specific roles filled and also half a dozen people who have put their hands up to help on the committee,” vice president Thorp said.

“Trudy is back in as secretary and Krystie Jones is treasurer. Maddy Sutton is also on as our events registrar and doing all of the media stuff which she is really good at.

“It’s great that we’ve got people to split the roles up with and share the load with different jobs.”

The club will break across the holiday period and return to racing in the first week of February.
