Local champions represent the Areas at Region level and winners progress to State level.
One major women’s event with a long history is what is known as the Inter Division Shield.
It is played each year and the winners don’t progress, but wow do they get high level competition and great satisfaction.
This year it was the Far Western Areas turn to host the event.
Last week 96 players gathered at the Hamilton Bowling Club, as many old and new friendships were renewed after many years of playing for this shield.
Each Playing Area plays the others over two games of 15 ends and this year it was Far Western’s turn to hold up the shield.
Final scores were: Far Western 243, Western District 210 and Corangamite 196.
Best winning rink for Far Western was Robyn Thomassen (Grangeburn), Bev Bourke (Macarthur) Nette Tinning (Balmoral) and Shirley Williams (Casterton) with a tally of 53 shots.
A minute’s silence was observed to remember one of the original players and stalwart Margaret Sumner.
A huge thank you to the Hamilton Bowling Club for allowing the use of their greens, umpires for the day, kitchen staff for morning and afternoon tea, and other willing helpers for scoring and score boards. Also, the many emergencies from our Far Western Area who were only too pleased to help out the Corangamite teams with fills.
