High score leads to national title for Clark

WARRAYURE’S Tom Clark is junior national champion in the double barrel after going the distance in Wagga Wagga at last week’s national championships.

The 17-year-old shot 50/50 and 109 straight in the shoot-off to earn the title, collecting his highest ever score along the way.

“There is a little bit of a collection going of sashes, I was definitely at my high at this shoot and I could have kept going,” he said.

“Conditions were quite good, it was quite hot which wears you out after a while though.

“I also finished second in the points score and only dropped one target and two seconds out of 100 targets.”

Clark was kept busy over the six-day championships, contesting double barrel, single barrel, points score, double rise, handicap, and champion of champions events.

His efforts also saw him finish top two in the national junior team.

“I was second in the Australian junior team and they travel overseas every two years, so I missed out this year,” he said.

“There is not really any big competition between now and the Victorian State Titles in October, so I will keep shooting every week, just to keep preparing and try and get better.”

He said his coaches’ contribution also ensured he was set up for success in NSW.

“Thanks to Garry Hayden and Gavin Height along with my parents and the Hamilton Clay Target Club,” he said.
