Tyrendarra take Surry tennis crown

TYRENDARRA has taken out the Surry District Tennis Association’s A grade crown after a stunning performance against Lawn Purple in Saturday’s grand final.

Played in Heywood, the game was an epic clash between the two teams who have led throughout the season, with Tyrendarra putting on one of their best performances yet to win 4-46 to 2-35.

The combinations of Dan Polkinghorne, Hannah Jones and mother and son duo Sally and Marcus McClintock found the perfect balance between experience and youth on Saturday work through some close sets.

“We were very chuffed afterwards, it was great hit it was a really good slog and everyone played really well,” Sally McClintock said.

“The scores didn’t entirely reflect the games and sets, in the end there were some 8-4 sets but in there was a lot of deuces and hard fought matches and the boys had a really good tussle as well.

“It was real good quality tennis and such good sportsmanship as well, they’re a fantastic team to play and it’s all fun and fair tennis.”

Polkinghorne and Marcus McClintock got the winning side off to a strong start defeating Lawn Purple’s Cameron McCallum and Nash Wollard 8-4, 8-4 to get two sets on the board.

Once again Lawn Purple’s women’s pairing of Kerri-Ann O’Keefe and Leah Sandeman stood up, but not without a huge challenge from Tyrendarra’s duo, with the two sets finishing 9-7, 9-7 in Lawn Purple’s favour.

“It’s the closest we’ve ever actually come to them (O’Keefe and Sandeman), usually they wipe the floor with us about 8-4 or 8-3 sometimes, bit we got a good start and we tried to apply pressure and hit the ball a lot harder,” McClintock said.

“We actually had our chances but they are such quality players that in the end they were able to get those last two games and it was really only two games in either set that stopped us getting the win.

“In the end our goal was to get as many games as we could so if it came down to sets at least we could get as many games in there.”

With the match all squared at two sets apiece, the premiership was heading the way of the team who could get on top in the mixed doubles.

In the mixed, one of the competition’s best players in Polkinghorne paired with youngster Jones to secure a solid 8-3 win for Tyrendarra with the mother and son pairing to round out the match with an 8-6 set victory.

“Marcus and I got off to a slow start, I think we were down 3-1 then we came back and levelled it and took it from there,” she said.

“He played brilliant tennis and so did Hannah, I’ve never seen her play so well, she was amazing, so consistent and just beautiful to watch.”

McClintock, who returned to tennis this year after a few years away from the game, said it will be a memorable year for her to line up alongside her son.

“It was really nice to get to play with Marcus this year,” she said.

“I don’t know if I’ll get another year in as a 45-year-old mum of three but when you stand back you do realise it’s quite special to be given the opportunity to play with him, fingers crossed we can do it again next year but we’ll see.”
