IT was a big finale to the Surry District Tennis Association season on Saturday with five grand finals taking place throughout Tyrendarra and Heywood.
In the A reserve grand final it was Lawn Volleys who held out against Heywood Woodies, 4-41 to 2-23 to win.
With just three teams in the competition Lawn Volleys have been a dominant team during the season and proved their strength on Saturday despite an impressive display from Heywood Woodies.
Despite dropping the first set of the day Lawn Volleys responded strongly with Nyla Conheady and Jane Booth defeating Holly Leaver and Dianne Finlayson 8-3 to level the scores.
Conheady continued her winning ways alongside Andrew Reeves, defeating Tieran Coustley and Leaver from Heywood.
Heywood’s Larry Sadler and Finlayson stood up in the fourth to once again level the playing field heading into the final two sets of mixed doubles.
Lawn Volleys cemented their victory with a dominant final two sets, 8-0 and 8-2 to earn the win.
B grade
It was a family victory for Lawn Aces with father-son duo of Gene Stewart and Phoenix Stewart pairing with mother-daughter duo Chelsea Smith and Jasper Smith to take out Saturday’s B grade decider.
Lawn Aces finished with a dominant 5-48 to 1-31 scoreline to defeat Heywood Gold.
It was a strong start for Lawn Aces winning their first two sets, but not without difficulty with Heywood Gold winning at least five games in each set.
The third set bought Heywood Gold back in the contest with a 9-8 win but Lawn Aces managed to finish off their final doubles pairings to close out the match.
Juniors
The biggest win of the day went to C1 side Lawn Volleys who defeated Heywood Hotshots, 6-36 to 0-28.
While the final scoreline left Heywood without a set win, they pushed Lawn Volleys all match, with every set pushing out to either 10 or 11 games.
Four of the six sets went to tie-breakers, and the other two were decided 6-4.
In the end Lawn Yellow’s contingent of Quinn Stewart, Darcy King, Eli Revell, Blythe Revell and Eden King managed to hold their nerve in the close sets to finish off the match with six sets on the scorecard.
In the junior C2 clash Heywood Aces claimed the title on Saturday after defeating Heywood Lobs, 5-31 to 1-20.
Xander Scott, Lachlan Sanders, Chaz Hann-Robb and Harry Todd were too strong despite a tough start against Heywood Lobs.
Aces managed to win the first set 6-1 before Lobs responded in the second with a 6-1 set win of their own.
