HAMILTON boxer, Katie Riddle, is set for an international debut with two bouts scheduled for this weekend in Singapore.
The Mocka’s Boxing Club product will captain Team Victoria, while jugging back-to-back bouts on Saturday and Sunday.
Riddle said her preparation had been seamless and was excited to test herself against Singapore’s best boxers.
“I am not too nervous, the girls I am fighting are pretty experienced and I have got the mentality that I have nothing to lose,” she said.
“I would say I am in the best shape of my life, I have had a perfect preparation and it has been really long.
“I have been trying to get fights in Victoria this year with no luck and so my fight camp started around Christmas.”
Preparation and recovery will be pivotal to Riddle’s prospects of success, with the weekend set to test Riddle’s processes for the first time in more than five years.
“I have been doing it a really long time and you know if you are getting a bit flat, in amateur boxing it is a bit different and you have to be fight ready all year round,” she said.
“I haven’t had the two fights over two days since 2017, so it will be interesting to see how it goes.
“A few weeks ago I did 16 rounds in two days, but it is different to a fight.”
Both bouts will be three three-minute rounds, and with tropical conditions in Singapore adding a different element to the trip, Riddle will only get one day to adapt before getting in the ring.
This weekend’s trip is only Riddle’s second ever international trip, and taking on the Team Victoria captaincy continues a trend for Mocka’s Boxing Club after Donald ‘Duck’ Jones was named Victorian captain for last year’s nationals in Adelaide.
“I was fairly shocked when they gave me team captain, obviously Donald got the captain for nationals,” Riddle said.
“I really would want to watch every girl fight.”
The bouts won’t be easy though, with Riddle set to face two of Singapore’s best boxers.
“The girl I fight on first day is their number one girl at 48kg, think she has also had a pro fight,” Riddle said.
“The girl I am fighting day two is the number one at 50kg and both have just been at the world championships.”
Having been forced to wait for bouts, Riddle is ready and raring to go for a return to the ring.
“That is the best part, this year I was supposed to fight a couple of weeks ago in Melbourne and it wasn’t until four days before that I found out I didn’t have an opponent,” she said.
“This will be my first international competition, but only the second time Mocka won’t be in my corner.
“I would have loved to have him there, but it is just not meant to be this time around.”
Riddle’s coach, Ray ‘Mocka’ McIntosh said he was confident she would put a strong showing together.
“She has put in the work, she has deserved it,” he said.
“We have done a lot of training camps and she has earnt her spot there.
“It is good experience for the Victorian titles, and naturally we are after the big one.”
Riddle leaves on Thursday with bouts on Saturday and Sunday before returning next Wednesday.
