PORTLAND’S South Coast Raceway crowned a new ‘King of the Street’ recently, as Hamilton’s Garry ‘Bones’ Hutchins took out the title in a hotly contested competition.
‘King of the Street’ is so named for the Street Car Challenge drag racing competition with the competitors having to win seven rounds in succession to claim the coveted title.
Hutchins has been competing for five years with his 1969 Holden Brougham sedan and the event finally saw him claim the title he has chased for all those years.
Hutchins competes not only at Portland, but also Warracknabeal and Heathcote in his beloved Brougham, and the victory carried not only a cash prize but also a trophy and the traditional crown for the winner.
Matt Addinsall won the burnout competition at LOO5EFEST in Stawell last month to add to the motor sport glory achieved by local enthusiasts over the weekend.
There were 104 cars entered for the overall event with 20 in the elite class that Addinsall competes in, starting with a practice round in the morning, before competitors then progress through to the qualifying round and then the final.
Addinsall sits at the wheel of a Holden VL Commodore that outputs 1000bhp using methanol race fuel and is a dedicated burnout car that has never been at top speed in a straight line.
Addinsall has been plying his burnout skills for the past six years, competing four or five times a year in Victoria and interstate, including at the famed Summernats in Canberra.
“I’ve had a couple of mishaps at Summernats where I tapped the wall which put me out of contention,” Addinsall said.
“I have a lot of people who support me in this undertaking and without them I couldn’t do it.”
