Gymnast performs after levelling up

PORTLAND gymnast Mia McDowell recently competed in her first Senior Victorian Championships in Geelong after an impressive performance at the trial event.

McDowell showcased her talents at the trial event earlier this year which qualified her for the Championships where she made it through to the finals.

Coming up against the best 45 gymnasts in her division from throughout Victoria, McDowell managed to secure a 12th place finish in vaults and a seventh place on bars in the level eight division two category.

Portland Gymnastics Club coach Brooke Smith said it was a huge effort from the young gymnast whose competition season has now flipped since moving up a level.

“Mia has only been competing and training at level eight since November last year – it’s a short turnaround moving from level seven to level eight because the competition season moves from the second half of the year to the first and a good chunk of that time falls into the Christmas holiday period,” Smith said.

“So she basically started in January and had her first competition of the year three or four weeks later.

“She has done a great job to be ready and do as well as she has.”

The results were an impressive start for McDowell and Smith said she is excited to see what more she is capable of.

“I am extremely proud of the resilience Mia has shown and the example that she set to always keep trying your best and never give up when things don’t go to plan,” she said.

“To achieve the results that she did is fantastic and I can’t wait to see what else she achieves in the rest of the year.

“Mia is also one of our junior coaches so she is a great role model for our younger gymnasts and is definitely inspiring our next generation.”
