PORTLAND golfers have proven their dominance in the Western region after winning the Western District Golf Association scratch pennant grand final on Monday.
It was a huge win for the team who finished on top after the regular match ups and closed out their impressive season 4-1 against Port Fairy in Terang.
Golfing stalwart Sandy Stewart captained the team which included Ellen Zeunert, Jill Treloar, Carol Taylor and Lucy Cumming.
“This is the first time we’ve played this pennant in four years since the regions have come together and it was a really good season,” Stewart said.
“On paper our handicaps were pretty close to Port Fairy’s so they were tough to come up against but they’re always really nice to play.”
The course at Terang added an extra level of difficulty on Monday, presenting different obstacles in comparison to Portland’s course.
“The course at Terang is a lot harder than ours and not one that we’re used to,” Stewart said.
“They have smaller greens which means any slight error can take you way off course whereas at Portland and other courses there is a little bit more room for error.
“I played there a month ago and absolutely lost the plot so I had to get that out of my head.
“Some others went up a week prior to play there and then some of the division two players played nine holes the night before to get used to it.
“Because it’s on the other side, some of the other teams are more used to it than we are, but we managed to pull it off.”
The division two Portland side came up against East Framlingham and went down by a slim margin 3-2.
With plenty of depth among Portland golfers there will be some added hype to the 2024 season with the final being hosted at the Portland Golf Club.
“We get to host next year which will be fantastic,” Stewart said.
“It’s shared around so we get to host next year and hopefully we’ll be up there again.
“The commitment from people this year was great, if people were sick we didn’t really have an emergency so it’s a big well done to everyone for that – hopefully next year we can up the commitment again and go for it.”
