PORTLAND Netball Association has finished their Interdistrict netball campaign in style with their Open/17-and-under defeating Warrnambool for the first time in the grand final on Sunday.
Portland hosted the last of three rounds at Flinders Park with the grand finals closing out three days of competition spread across April and May.
It was an impressive finish for the Open/17-and-under Portland team who were yet to defeat Warrnambool Netball Association in their first three encounters, before an upset victory 29-27 on Sunday in the final match.
There were plenty of different combinations out on court with the side led by former Dartmoor shooter and current Hamilton Open player Danielle Vankalken who was an integral part of the team on Sunday.
Alongside Vankalken there was some more experience with Teresa Rogers while youngsters Stella Rogers, Tiarna Keegan and Tigrha Cleary were big contributors across the three tournaments.
Portland also made the 15-and-under grand final but went down to an impressive Warrnambool team, 37-21.
In the 13-and-under grand final it was another close match up between Portland and Warrnambool but Warrnambool eventually got the job done, defeating the local side 30-25.
The 11-and-under grand final was played out between Hamilton and Warrnambool with Hamilton claiming a 12-4 victory.
Sunday’s event marked the last day of the inaugural series with each association hosting a tournament day.
With a successful run this year the associations are hopeful to get the same interdistrict competition up and running next year.
