Winter Solstice Fun Run on Sunday

PORTLAND Runners Club will once again be hosting their annual Winter Solstice Fun Run, which is set to take place this Sunday.

The event, which was first started in 2013 and has run every year since save for those interrupted by the COVID pandemic, is comprised of three events: the Lagoon and Foreshore (9km), the 15km Lighthouse to Lighthouse and the 22km Lighthouse to Lighthouse.

Runners club president Dawn Reynolds said it’s expected to be a great event with a strong turnout.

“We’ll have plenty of locals running, along with people from Hamilton and Warrnambool… we currently have 100 people or so signed up and we’re expecting more,” Reynolds said.

“A lot of people from out of town really like the trail that we have, particularly those from Hamilton since they don’t have the coastal tracks that we do.

“The lighthouse events will have buses to help people get out to Cape Nelson lighthouse where the event begins.”

The club will continue to accept online entries up until tomorrow, with “limited opportunity” for people to enter on the day.

The Lagoon and Foreshore event kicks off at 9:30am for walkers and 10am for runners, while the 15km Lighthouse event will begin at 8:30am for walkers and 9:30am for runners, with the 25km run to start at 8:30am.

Buses will head off 30 minutes before the start of their respective events.
