Wallis, Ayres win again

WINNER of the inaugural Winter Solstice Fun Run 25km trail run Ben Wallis has done it again, taking out first place honours on Sunday in the men’s division with a time of 1hr40min36sec.

In a blistering time, Wallis finished 19 minutes ahead of second placed local runner Troy Jensen who earned the silver medal with a finish of 1hr59min09sec.

First place in the women’s section was previous winner Rachel Ayres who clocked the trail run in 2hr00min20sec ahead of former Portlander Paige Clay who ran the course in 2hr21min19sec.

Despite the forecast predicting heavy showers and hail, the sun was out for morning with the wind the only factor in affecting the run.

Local competitor Jensen said he was happy with his second-place result behind an impressive runner like Wallis.

“I was really happy with my time, I was hoping for sub two hours, so I got what I was aiming for,” he said.

“I’ve been running about three times a week in the lead up, but I haven’t done any competition running so it was good.

“The weather wasn’t too bad either in the end, the worst bit was near the golf course heading into town, so it was a bit of a grind at the end but other than that it was pretty protected.”

Jensen wasn’t the only runner in his family on the course on Sunday with his mum Tracy Jensen also hitting the track alongside her sister.

Despite completing the 25km in the morning, Jensen still had some run left in his legs which saw him play a full game of soccer in the afternoon for Portland Panthers.

“The soccer side was bit short in their div two team so myself and Zeke (Hatten) decided to play after our run,” he said.

“The legs were pretty second hand, and it wasn’t my finest game that’s for sure.”
