Blues and Penguins earn glory

GRAND Finals are special in all sports and Thursday evening saw the deciders in the term two Pennant Season for the Hamilton Table Tennis Association take place at HILAC with some very exciting match ups across both grades.

A Grade

Kookaburras v Blues

Kookaburras was first on the board with a marathon battle between Elijah Gellert and the Blues’ Steve Clayton, that saw Clayton pick up the first two games and he looked to have the rubber well in hand, however Gellert was into the game and fought back to pick up the next three games and claim the rubber 12-10 in the fifth game.

The next rubber also went to Kookaburras, with Katie Wooldridge and Blues’ Caleb Gellert doing battle in a game that was more even than the first, with the wins more evenly dispersed, Wooldridge claimed the win 11-5 in the fifth game.

Then came the twist as the Blues’ Michael Fitzpatrick won the next singles from the Kookaburras’ Aidan Lomas, then Fitzpatrick teamed up with Steve Clayton to take the first doubles rubber in straight games from Kookaburras’ Elijah Gellert and Katie Wooldridge. 

Clayton and Fitzpatrick then picked up the next two singles rubbers in straight games to give their team a handy lead of 4-2.

 Kookaburras’ Aidan Lomas pegged back the Blues by winning the next singles rubber 11-7 in the fourth game from Blues’ Caleb Gellert.

Fitzpatrick and Caleb Gellert teamed up for the second doubles rubber for Blues against Kookaburras’ Elijah Gellert and Aidan Lomas, with the Blues pair winning the rubber 12-10 in the fourth game, this rubber was followed by Blues’ Fitzpatrick taking the winning singles rubber from Kookaburras’ Wooldridge. 

Blues won the grand final 6-23 from Kookaburras 3-10.

B Grade

Penguins v Koalas

Penguins were keen to get off to a good start, picking up the first two rubbers in straight games as Penguins’ Liam Lomas and Brianna Rankin picked up their rubbers from Koalas’ Justin and Myah Broadwood. Ruby Rankin won the first rubber for Koalas in straight games from Penguins’ Chamil Hansa. 

Lomas and Brianna Rankin picked up the first doubles rubber 11-3 in the fourth game from Koalas’ Justin and Myah Broadwood to give their team a lead of 3-1. 

Justin Broadwood picked up a handy singles rubber from Penguins’ Brianna Rankin and that’s where their match ended.

The Penguins pair of Lomas and Hansa won their next singles rubbers in straight games from the Koalas’ players Myah Broadwood and Ruby Rankin.

Lomas and Hansa were really on to a good thing, teaming up and taking the second doubles rubber from Koalas’ Justin Broadwood and Ruby Rankin, also in straight games. 

Penguins had the win in the bag with three singles rubbers left over.

Penguins won the grand final 6-18 from Koalas 2-7.
