PENSHURST has claimed a stunning victory in round 10 of the Mininera and District Football League against previously undefeated Tatyoon as the Bombers celebrated its First Nations culture at Penshurst Recreation Reserve, 12.10 (82) – 8.5 (53).
With the home side featuring ex-AFL star Nathan Lovett-Murray among its ranks for the day, the team wasn’t going to be intimidated by Tatyoon and the record it brought into the round.
The home side wasn’t headed on the day as it ran with a significant wind for the first term and had 10 shots on goal in the opening quarter but could only register four majors as it held a 22-point lead at the sound of the first siren.
With Tatyoon having the use of the wind for the second quarter Penshurst had to claim the defensive high ground to keep its visitors at bay, and despite losing the term they entered the long break with an 11-point lead.
Upon resumption the Bombers had the wind again, but they knew that the ladder leaders would come hard seeking to keep their undefeated record intact.
Again, the home side produced some good football to extend its lead at the last change of ends to 25 points, but Tatyoon would have use of the wind in the last term.
During the break the weather changed, and the visitors didn’t have a wind as strong as it had been for the rest of the game but there was still an advantage to be gained from it.
So determined was Penshurst to maintain its lead that the players extended their advantage to win the final term and claim a huge upset.
Aaron Glare was outstanding all game long and was deservedly named as best on ground and along with Henry Bensch, Jacob Mibus, Izaac Ewing, Kieran Neeson and Jayden Watson gave the supporters plenty to cheer about.
Tatyoon was well served by Trent Baird, James Shanhun, Kieran Collins, Joe Gibson, Thomas Quick and David Brady and the side retained its ladder lead but only on percentage.
