ATTACKING, free flowing hockey was the order of the day at Brian Roberts Field, Pedrina Park on Sunday as a total of 24 goals were scored in the three men’s division one games in round eight of the Glenelg Region Hockey Association.
The early time slot saw second placed Bulls retain its ladder position with an entertaining 7-3 victory against College as the defence playbook was tossed out with both teams attacking at every opportunity.
Gordon Last has been on fire in front of goal this season with his personal tally now standing at six goals from the five games he has played as he added another two to his tally in this game.
Last wasn’t the only Bull to score a brace of goals as James Broad found the back of the net twice also, while Tim Dean, Cooper Hein and Jack H added their names to the scoresheet too.
College tried hard to match their opponents in attacking flair and normally three goals would see a team walk away with victory, but the defensive lapses allowed the Bulls to capitalise on the mistakes.
Harry Brown, Charlie Duver and Charlie Hawthorne all put the ball in the Bulls net, but it wasn’t enough to allow College to claim victory.
Couldabeens v Demons
The second match of the day was a thriller with Couldabeens snatching a one goal victory against Demons, 5-4 with the spectators being enthralled with yet another high-class attacking game.
Lachlan McArthur was on fire in front of the net for Couldabeens as he registered a hat trick of goals that kept his side in the contest, while Thomas Bunge also netted for the victors.
In reply, the Demons kept pace in a goal-for goal display as Ryan Hilsdon netted twice and James Guthrig and Jai Durbidge also added goals to the overall tally, only for the Demons to fall short as time ran out.
Rams v Jakabytes
The final game of the day was just as stunning as those that went before it, as top of the ladder Jakabytes took on third placed Rams with the Jakabytes retaining its undefeated status, 3-1
The last time these two teams met the game was a tense 1-1 draw in round two, but this match saw the ball moving quickly between each half with the Jakabytes pouncing on any defensive mistakes from the Rams as father-son team mates, Heath and Tom Templeton both added their names to the scoresheet along with Arthur Biggin, while Demons looked to Aiden S to add its only goal in reply.
Demons may well occupy the bottom rung of the ladder, but the side is playing much better than this position shows, while Jakabytes is sweeping aside all before it as each of the other teams seeks to be the first to knock them off.
Women’s Division 1
Dunkeld Blue v Dunkeld Red
Spectators who arrived in time for the early timeslot at Brian Roberts Field on Sunday were given no indication as to what was to follow in the later games as Dunkeld Blue and Dunkeld Red played out a scoreless draw, 0-0.
For lovers of defensive play, the game was a must watch, as both teams repeatedly turned back attacking raids at each end of the field.
The ball rebounded to the opposite end throughout the match as the defenders continually doused the forward thrusts, only to see the opposition do the same at the other end.
As a result, the ladder remains unchanged going into the school holiday break.
