Portland Karate tournament hits the mark

THE Portland Kyokushin Karate Club hosted its 10th annual Portland Open Border Challenge over the weekend, with contestants travelling from far and wide to take part in a day with plenty of action.

Event organiser and Portland dojo operator Deb Millard said it was another great event hosted at the Portland Secondary College gym.

“It was fantastic, we got lots of good comments from people throughout the day saying how much they enjoyed it,” Millard said.

Portland had some noteworthy performances amongst the 29 events, with 11 podium finishes.

Most notable was Jarrah Cook’s first-place finish in the Male 8-and-under non-contact division, with Elijah Read coming third in that division.

“We had a lot of great performances out of our local competitors… for many of them it was their first ever full-contact competition, so they did really well,” Millard said.

“Coming up we’ve got nationals in August which will take place in Sydney, and we’ve got the regional tournament in Winchelsea which is in September… hopefully we can see some people getting to those.”
