Dwayne’s Day a huge success

PORTLAND Motocross Club’s annual Dwayne’s Day in the Dirt event was a roaring success on the weekend, with the club hosting a record number of competitors on the grass track near Cape Bridgewater.

Club president Leigh Watt said it was a “really good” event which hosted a bigger turnout than what had been expected.

“Perhaps it was down to this area being the only dry place around, but we had 155 riders total, including 89 seniors and 66 juniors,” he said.

“It was a great day and good conditions; we were pleased with how everything turned out.”

While there were many great results recorded on the day, Watt said the primary focus was a celebration of the contribution to motocross made by the late Dwayne Alexander, for whom the event is named.

“He did a lot for the sport in the region… he’d be stoked to see people coming from far and wide to participate in an event like this,” Watt said.

“We had people coming from as far as Shepparton and Geelong to compete.”

Watt added that the club has some more events planned in the near future, with their next opportunity to use the grass track likely to be in “early to mid-September.”
