TWO Portland junior motocross riders have put together exceptional performances at the elite level of the sport over the past couple of months, with one competitor now having a state title to his name.
Ryder Trickey was recently crowned with an A grade state title in the 65cc class, while also coming second in 85cc.
Banjo Watt has also put in some impressive races in C grade, coming third in 65cc and sixth in 85cc at the titles.
Jason Trickey, Portland Motocross Club vice-president and Ryder’s father, said it was pleasing to see the young riders performing so well at such a high level of performance.
“They’re racing the state’s best… it’s a big ask but they’re doing really well,” he said.
“They have worked really hard this year on skill and racecraft on and off the bike and it’s great to see that work pay off.”
The titles are held over four rounds in locations across Victoria, with Portland, Warrnambool, Broadford and Traralgon all hosting an event this time around.
“It’s a great result for a small club to have juniors performing this well… both myself and Leigh (Watt, president and Banjo’s father) want to thank the club for all their support.”
Trickey added that the group has seen other great performances from a number of junior riders, with a few names standing out.
“Jett Bennett in the 125cc B grade, River Hollis in 50cc, Zaiden Kavanaugh in C grade and Eli Nunn in 50cc… all of these juniors have been riding well and making plenty of progress.”
