THE 2023-24 season is officially under way after a delightful opening day on Saturday.

Long time members, Margaret and Geoff Kerr, rolled down the first kitty and bowl, and club president Glenda made an inspiring speech and I quote, “as we step onto the green today, let’s remember the true essence of our club: friendship, fun. and a little healthy rivalry. Whether you’re a seasoned bowler or someone new to the game, this is a place where we come together to share laughs, create memories and maybe even improve our bowling skills along the way”.

At the end of the day, the mercurial Geoff Woods lead the winning team of Fay Gebert and the ever-improving Rex Wedding to victory, winning all their games with 16 shots to spare.

Also doing well was the in-form club secretary, Neville Linke, who teamed with legend, John Overall and Carolyn Schurmann, to finish seven shots behind the winners.

Who on earth made those red lamingtons for afternoon tea?  they were divine.

The men of the club are having to step back, as a host of new women bowlers make their mark.

Three superstars teamed up to decimate the opposition’s 48 bowlers on Thursday.

Elma Astbury skippered Glenda Hawker and Margaret Graham to an enormous victory with three wins and a massive 22 shots up.

Unfortunately, l was one of their victims.

Gerard Lucas, who moved to the skipper’s position, guided Rob Woodhouse and Graeme (happy birthday) Langsworth to second place.

It is hardly worth mentioning that both skippers are lethal lefties.

With pennant fast approaching, head selector Peter explained to members the difficulty facing selectors this year.

Last year there were two division two teams, each with 12 players.

This year each team will have eight players, meaning eight from division two will now have to move down to division three.

Pennant selection, like football selection, is a thankless and difficult task.
