Cullinane and Vics claim national title

VICTORIA has claimed another national title with victory in the 9th Australian Bowling Arm Championships , which were held in Tasmania, and Simon Cullinane (Dunkeld) and Mick Swann (Heywood) were members of the team that lifted the trophy.

Bowlers Arm competition is one of the major growth areas of bowls in Victoria, with many bowlers competing successfully in open competition, pennant and in Bowlers Arm events throughout Victoria.

Competitors use a mechanical “arm” for a variety of reasons, including where injury stops a player from being able to compete as an able-bodied bowler.

“There was 15 of us in the Victorian team that played in the championships in Tasmania, and we were good enough to claim the title,” Cullinane said.

“I played singles and pairs with Mick Swann, who played brilliantly the whole week.

“Mick and I had earned our places in the team through winning the State pairs title and undergoing the sessions held in Sunbury as a lead up to the team selection.

Now that Victorian duties are at an end, Cullinane and Swann will concentrate on the upcoming pennant season which begins in mid-October and runs through to February next year.

This latest triumph only adds to the growing list of outstanding achievements attained by local bowlers, and comes only a month after another Dunkeld local, Darren Gordon finished runner up at the national titles on the Gold Coast.
