Parklander Candour

IT’S an ill wind that blows nobody any good.

Friday and Saturday’s southerly flow carried the remnants of winter’s bitter chill, but the promise of warmer days ahead as patches of sunshine warmed competitors in the weekend events; just enough so that layers were peeled off only to be donned again as the clouds periodically eclipsed the sun.

Through these temperature fluctuations, the Irvin family kept their eye on the prize and returned rounds of golf that encroached on the exceptional.

Saturday

A MISNOMER of sorts, as the Monthly Medal takes place on the first Saturday of each month.

Previously the winner of this event did indeed receive a medal, but in recent years a far more desirable prize has been on offer - a sizeable meat tray is now carried home by the winner.

Wise heads at the club had decided that such a prize would be unlikely to find its way into the bottom of a draw and forgotten about, the fate of many medals.

So it was that a keen field of contestants arrived at the course eager to participate in the battle for the meat tray.

In the end it wasn’t a contest, as Sue Irvin returned a nett score of 62 to romp away with the win by five shots.

This is regarded as an “exceptional round” by Golf Australia’s Golflink system, so a somewhat savage handicap pruning will take place.

Allan Flavell’s excellent 67 nett earned him victory in the stroke event.

John Wilkinson and Peter Irvin scored nett 70s, Marie Cook returned a nett 71, while Allan Hitchcock and Vince O’Brien finished on 72 with Hitchcock claiming fifth on countback.

Les Pye was the winner of the longest straight drive on the ninth.

Nearest the pins were Peter on the second, Steve Nattrass on the third, Sue on the fifth, Barry Oldaker on the 11th, John Wilkinson on the 13th and Mitch Miller on the 15th.

Longest putters were Flavell on the first, Graeme Torney on the 16th and 17th, and Nattrass on the 18th.

Flavell won the birdies and ferrets draw and had the fewest putts for the round with 23.

Friday

IRVIN of the Peter variety was the winner of the Friday nine-hole stroke event played off the red tees on the inward nine.

His 39-9-30 saw him best Kelly and Allan Hitchcock, who finished on 33.5 and 34 respectively, while the next best was Gaye Goggin with 34.5.

Nearest the pin was Kelly on the 13th and the longest putter was Heather Wilkinson on the 18th.

Wednesday

THE event was held over the outward nine plus holes one, two and nine.

Allan Flavell in a pre-cursor to his Saturday form won the 13-hole stableford event after his 29 points held off Stewart Turner on 27 and Alex Walter on 26.

Nearest the pins went to David Rendell on the second and John Wilkinson on the 13th.

Longest putt on the first was Wilkinson, while Turner won the birdies and ferrets.

Tuesday

A BURST of four seasons in one day weather greeted the players on Tuesday.

Playing a stableford event over 18 holes, Gaye Goggin took out the win with 36 points from Mary McCallum on 31 and Jenny Row on 30 points.

Nearest the pins were Goggin on the fifth and Row on the eighth, while longest putters were Jodie McGregor on the first, Sue on the 17th and Gina Kelly on the 18th.

Goggin won the birdies and ferrets.

This week

A RESTRICTED schedule takes place this coming week at Parklands with works taking place adjacent to the fifth and sixth holes.

This means that these holes are inaccessible for all golfers for the coming week.

Events that avoid these two holes will still take place today, Friday and Saturday.
