A TRIO of junior basketball teams from Hamilton travelled to Geelong for the annual Korr Korr Ngitji Geelong Tournament with some impressive results, along with some lessons learnt for the players.
Under-16 Boys
THE boys played in the top division and opened the weekend against the Warrnambool Seahawks, going down 37-63.
Riley Iredell (13 points) and Abdul Muhktar (11 points) were the standouts.
Round two saw the Hurricanes take on Altona, and fell 20 points short, 40-60.
Iredell (nine points) and George Clark (eight points) topped the scoring for Hamilton.
The Hurricanes then took on Wallan Panthers in the third game and claimed their first win of the weekend, 56-52.
Iredell (17 points), Muhktar (13 points), and Charlie Baker (12 points) were the focal points for the winners.
Sunday’s early game saw Hamilton record a second consecutive victory, defeating Surfcoast 46-29.
Muhktar’s 14 points proved instrumental, before the team then finished the weekend on a winning note with a 55-53 victory against Westgate.
It was another strong performance from Muhktar, putting up 18 points, while Iredell finished with 12.
Under-14 Girls
HAMILTON opened its top division campaign against the Gators and was in the contest right up until the end, going down by one point.
Emily Iredell led the way for the Hurricanes, putting up 14 points in the 30-31 loss.
The girls then backed up the effort against Bellarine, putting up 47 points to grab their first win of the weekend by 27 points.
Iredell again led the scoring with 20 for the Hurricanes.
The Hurricanes then backed it up with another strong performance with a 62-14 defeat of Mildura.
Iredell added 23 points to her weekend tally, while Taya Sherlock (12) and Elsie Brown (11) also hit double digits in support.
Round four saw Hamilton face Geelong United and collected a 26-21 victory.
Yolanda O’Sullivan chipped in with six points, while Iredell matched the output for the Hurricanes.
The final game of the weekend saw the visitors take on Korumburra, with the Hurricanes doing down, 31-43.
Iredell put up another 20 points to cap off a strong weekend for the talented junior.
Under-12 Boys
THE Hurricanes contested the third division and opened the weekend with a clash against Gators on Saturday morning and went down, 30-53, despite the best effort of William Iredell (10 points).
Round two was a clash against Seymour and the Hurricanes played out a low-scoring contest, eventually losing 11-20.
Iredell once again led the way with four points, while Ethan Dumesny managed three.
Saturday night’s clash against Warragul proved to be the biggest loss for the weekend, going down 13-75, with Iredell (six points) and Sonny Shepherd (five points) the standouts for the Hurricanes.
Sunday’s games started with a round four game against Kyneton, with the Tigers winning, 49-15, with Shepherd putting up nine points.
The weekend finished with a match-up against Bellarine, with Hamilton leading at half time, before a 2-12 third quarter saw the Hurricanes fall behind and eventually lose, 14-27.
Iredell top-scored with four points, supported by Xavier Logan with three points.
