THE Portland and District Soccer League wrapped up its inaugural season on Wednesday, with Portland West Wanderers defeating AFC Cashmore taking out premiership honours.
The competition saw six teams compete in a social event, in what Portland Panthers coach Stephen Von Tunk said was an “awesome” initiative to get up and running.
“We’re really happy with how it panned out, it was good to get some new people into the game of soccer, and just trying it out,” Von Tunk said.
“All the games were competitive but played in really good spirits which was great to see, I think everyone who participated really enjoyed it.”
Von Tunk said the Panthers had set themselves a goal of trying to enter a women’s team into the 2024 South West Victoria Football Association season.
“Hopefully this leads to our women’s team entering… in 2024,” he said.
“I'm keen to see how big this competition can get as it greatly increases our profile in the community and brings people into the game who may not have considered it.”
