GRANGEBURN and Penshurst played on Friday night, with the division one clash rescheduled due to the Penshurst Cup.
In perfect conditions - both on the green and from above - the visitors had a three-rink win.
More than 30 spectators attended, normally very few appear, and the atmosphere was great.
Penshurst set the standard for big totals for the round with a 71-46 result.
Ali Rentsch torqued out 26 to Grant Gibson 16, but it was closer than that until late in the game.
Phill Allen had the key to success, defeating the Leah McCabe team, 24-14, while Mick Ross had the better of Bert Partington, 21 to 16.
Portland set the record for the high score for the season with a 90-40 win against Casterton.
A total of nine percent of live bowls scored.
Peter Cottier with 26 to Andy Alderton 20, John Rappard with Lindsay Gruar, Keith Meerbach and Dianne Huppatz rolled up 40 to Mick Kearns’ eight, and Tony Hogan 24 to Neil Shannon 16.
Memorial had the second big one with 80 to Balmoral’s 37.
Clay Holcombe 35 to Troy Gore 11, Kel Wiffen 22 to Peter Merryfull 11, and Graeme Solly 25 to Nev Trotman 15.
The fourth score of 70 plus was put together by Heywood at Hamilton.
For the home side, Bill Satchell 15 to Mick Swan 22, Norm Pech 14 to Ricky Angelino 22, and Hamish McDonald 14 to Lionel Pevitt 28.
Ladder: Portland 112, Memorial 106, Penshurst 88, Heywood 71, Balmoral 54, Grangeburn 33, Hamilton 24, Casterton 24. Port and Memorial are equal on shots up with 187 each.
Division two
THREE home sides won and the high team score was 33.
Putting that figure together was first-time Hamilton Gold skipper, Michael Pech, who defeated Portland’s Allan Warburton, while Jim Brody got back on the winners list with 24 to Andy Smail’s nine.
Macarthur 46 to Heywood 28, thanks to Clifton Tonissen 22 to Coral Stephens 17, and Bill Edge 24 to Johnny Angelino 11.
Coleraine had a win over Grangeburn, but both sides remained in the same places on the ladder.
Bruce Armstrong 32 to John Colcott 12, and Steve Cooper 24 to Keven Bailey 20.
Memorial and Hamilton Green had the closest clash of the division with a 35 to 39 final scoreline.
Gerry Watt 22 to Geoff Woods 16, and Dean Beckman 13 to Peter Clapham 23.
Ladder: Hamilton Green 83, Portland 79, Grangeburn 68, Macarthur 63, Memorial 59, Coleraine 48, Heywood 28, Hamilton Gold 20.
Division three
AGAIN, three home sides won, with one rink draw, and three 24-rink scores and two 45 totals.
As was the case in division one, Penshurst played the home game at Hamilton on Thursday evening and the hosts had a five-shot win.
Ann Rentsch got a win against Maximillian Spiller, 21 to 17, while Ian McLean 15 to Heather McIntyre 24, to see the final score at 36-41.
Moving to Saturday and Portland awaited the Balmoral convoy to drop off the division three side and the wait was worthwhile, winning 45 to 29.
Heather Burgess 20 was pipped by one by Paul Raggatt, while Ken Place and team continued the current form to defeat Kathy Simons, 25 to 10.
Memorial played Dartmoor at home and had a 13-shot win after Peter Fasoli 24 held off Redeye 17, and Kevin Husson with another 24 to Peter Holmes 18.
Grangeburn defeated Hamilton Green on one rink and had the draw, between Wendy Kosch and Miriam Tonissen at 18-18, while Rosemary Spencer tossed Ray Fary aside, winning 27 to 16.
Ladder: Memorial 81, Portland 78, Penshurst 56, Hamilton Green 52, Hamilton Gold 51, Dartmoor 49, Grangeburn 43, Balmoral 38.
Division four
THERE were two one-shotters, with the top team score of 33, along with seven ladder position changes and a washout.
In what would have been horrible conditions for all games, rain at times heavy and water on greens meant only four results were recorded.
It was also a round where only one home side won.
Heywood with 22 to Memorial Red top score of 58, as Des Stuchbery lost 9-33 against Rhonda Bramley, and R. Pevitt 13 to Jude Fasoli 25.
Portland and Memorial Blue played the first one-shot contest at Portland.
Les Baker 24 to Jan Hamblin 18, and Gary Milich 15 to Rob Hamblin 22, resulting in a 39-40 final score.
The second one-bowl win went to Hamilton Gold against Coleraine.
I must say the Coleraine leader for Robin Salamon’s team was inspiring the way she led.
Julie Robertson set the standard most ends when the Salamon team trounced Jimmy Nichol, 21 to 10.
Next door Barry Dowling got the better of the Woolley team and with 20-8 result kept Gold on the top rung.
Grangeburn 30 to Hamilton Green 40 was the final completed result, following Peter Moore 14 to Doreen Edwards 18, and Suzanne Wilson 16 to Mal Brinkman 22.
On Friday at lunch time, the Penshurst and Macarthur game which had been rescheduled as above had to be abandoned.
Just at start time it poured, and the green was under water.
After a while managers decided to abandon the game and therefore points are shared.
Thanks to all who facilitated the different game times and by the Friday night game, many thought it should happen more often.
As an aside, the Western Playing Area is scheduling an evening round where all bar two division one games will be played at the one venue under lights.
