Speedway racers building on early success

LOCAL speedway racers Brock Hallett and Luke Storer have been gearing up for another big season of racing in 2023-24, with the pair having been hard at work on and off the track.

And while Storer admitted he struggled through the prior campaign, he’s gotten off to the perfect start this year, claiming victory in the ACT State Titles on November 4.

Storer has primarily raced speedcars, but this season will also be racing in Modlite, with a couple of events already under his belt, including a second-placed finish at Whyalla.

Storer said it was great to get a “good run” over in Canberra to get a win close to the start of the season.

“I’m definitely feeling good about how I’m racing at the moment; I didn’t have a good season last time around, but with a few meetings coming up I’ve got to keep myself in good shape,” he said.

“Longer-term I’ve got the Australian titles coming up in March next year over in Perth, other than that there’s some events coming up including Speedweek which has an event in Portland on December 30.

“The car feels really good, we dealt with a lot of mechanical issues last time around which set us back a fair bit, hopefully this year we can turn it around and rack up some more wins.”

Hallett enjoyed a hugely successful 2022-23 campaign, highlighted by his victory at Warrnambool’s Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic, one of the biggest speedway events in Australia.

He has also already had some success to begin his campaign this season, placing second in a Victoria Series event in Warrnambool in mid-November.

“We’ll be doing all of Sprintcar Speedweek which starts Boxing Day over at Murray Bridge,” Hallett said.

“I’m looking forward to go into the Classic as the defending champion and obviously I want to go out there and try to win it again.”

Hallett said both him and the car feel in good shape as they approach their upcoming events.

“We had good speed at Warrnambool, and the car is just running really well,” Hallett said.

“I’m feeling good behind the wheel, and I think that just comes down to spending as much time in the seat, that’s the way you give yourself the best chance.

“It’s how you keep your eye in, and you work on your race-craft.

“It’s also about being as prepared as possible, we have multiple vehicles ready to go so if we have an accident or something goes wrong, I can get up and go again the next day without having to pull an all-nighter.

“I’m lucky to have a great team around me who I can rely on to get me the right tools for the job.”
