Last midweek round before Christmas

WHAT a way to finish the pre-Christmas break division one pennant rounds.

Two games, one with a three-shot margin and one with two.

Played at opposite ends of our playing area, Balmoral and Memorial were the hosts.

In weather that almost got to the cancellation temperature, it did after the last end was played at Balmoral, as the home side went down by two shots.

Portland collected the the victory and the resulting 14 points.

Trish Brody got the only points for Balmoral after defeating Heather Burgess, 19-9, while Chick Trotman drew Kerrie Alexander in the managers draw and lost, 17 to 25.

Nettie Tinning had the closest one but went down 22-26 to Shirley Rogers.

Down south, Memorial lay in waiting for Hamilton and this was a three-shot win to the home side.

Marion Husson lost to Elma Astbury, 19-20, Jan De Zoete had the best score with 25 to Jenny Pole 16, and June Leahy got 14 to Kay Satchell 19.

Grangeburn had the bye and on past calculations came out the worst figure wise with only 13 points and two shots.

It moved the side back to second.

Ladder: Portland 124 points 101 shots, Grangeburn 123 -105, Memorial 103 -12, Hamilton 82 -1, Balmoral, 81 -55.

Division two

THIRTY-TWO was the highest team score across the division and that came about when Val Baker got the rub of the green against Ann Rentsch and won, 32-7.

Maree Matters 24 defeated Jenni Kinnealy 20, helping Portland get off the bottom of the ladder with the win.

Memorial had the second Hamilton side on the green and won by five after Pearl Kitt defeated Fay Gebert 20 to 19, and Jude Fasoli 22 defeated Robyn Donovan 16.

Grangeburn played Macarthur at the comms tower location and the radio frequency must have mucked something up, as the score was 25 to 45.

Lesley Stewart 10 to Bev Bourke 19, and Wendy Kosch lost to the one useable armed umpire, Carol Uebergang.

Coleraine at home played the neighbours Casterton, and the visitors obviously got up steam travelling over the Muntham.

Bev Fry got 16 for Coleraine, but Teresa Sealey bettered that by two, and Lesley Beaton 17 to Berniece Sullivan 19.

Ladder: Memorial 116, Casterton 108, Macarthur 89, Coleraine 76, Hamilton 69, Portland 56, Grangeburn 54, Penshurst 48.

Division three

MEMORIAL had the third side at home and played Casterton over near the tool shed.

Julie McInnes with 18 defeated Helen Lucas on 14, and Trish Watt 20 was six ahead of Glenis O’Connell at the handshake.

Grangeburn had a visit by the Hamilton side and put together a bigger score than next door, but the ‘tonians went better, 37-43.

Marg Hadley 15 to Bev Langsworth 27, and Suzanne Wilson got two points after defeating Doreen Edwards, 22 to 16.

Macarthur 50 to Dartmoor 38 pushed the Darties down for the third week in a row.

Carole Dunn 16 to Elaine Jones 18, and Libby Marchant with John Bragg and Ernie Pimblett top scored with 34 to Sue Tregellis and team with 20.

The last game to report was between Heywood at home against Portland with six shots the final margin in the visitors’ favour.

Leonie Buchanan 17 defeated Marg Millich 12 and the difference came when Barb Moore got 16 recorded and Myra Bourke got 27.

The next round of midweek pennant will be on January the 16th.
