Portland and Heywood celebrate successful tournament

PORTLAND Golf Club and Heywood Golf Club came together for four days of competition to host their annual South West Classic, with play taking place across both clubs from Friday last week until Monday.

Event organiser and Heywood life member Brad Koenig said the event ran “very well.”

“There were 30 different clubs represented stretching as far as Brisbane to Melbourne,” he said.

“A big thanks goes out to the event organising committee for helping to get this done, the only reason events like this run so smoothly is because of the work that is done behind the scenes.

“I only heard good things from the visitors that came along, and by all accounts they’re keen to come back and do it again next year.”

Friday saw Portland Golf Club host a 4BBB stableford event at Portland, with Tom Bibby and Wally Stephens taking out the men’s competition while Vicki Waldron and Merle Menzel finished on top in the ladies comp.

The men’s podium was rounded out by Tony Filipovic and Bill Richards in second, and Steve Vicary and Peter Stotz, while in the women it was Ellen Zeunert and Lyndell Hampshire followed by Barb Bibby and Jill Treloar.

Saturday saw contestants head over to Heywood where they played a stroke and stableford event.

The winner of the ladies A grade stroke was Sandy Stewart, while Waldron came in runner-up, while in the men’s stroke Clint Foster edged out Jayden McLeod for victory.

It was a particularly special day as Barry Wilson was able to nail a hole-in-one on the 14th hole, taking home $500 in prize money for doing so.

Sunday saw another stroke event, this time back in Portland, with Noah McLeod taking out top place in the men’s event followed by Foster in second.

Waldron was able to square the ledger with Stewart in the ladies competition, as the pair again finished first and second respectively.

Heywood hosted a four-person gentsomes event to round out the competition on Monday, and it was the combination of Wayne Rogers, Renee Dehaas, Phil Palmer and Stephen Cocks who were victorious in the men’s competition.

The mixed event saw Graeme Brierley, Jean Youl, Brian Harris and Ann Dickinson crowned as winners, while Karen Cocks, Jenny Foster, Sue Storer and Coral Stephens won the ladies event.
