THE Portland Motocross Club is gearing up for a big 2024 with two new faces at the helm, Tom Nunn and Jason Trickey, as joint presidents.
Plenty of racing is lined up in the coming weeks, including a club day on Saturday and the Western Region Series hitting track for its opening round on the weekend of February 24-25.
Nunn said the club is keen to get regular racing in Heywood and to welcome any new or interested riders to the sport.
“This year we’re aiming for a really decent club series with six rounds and then we have three rounds of the grass track series back up,” he said.
“There was a bit of a lull since COVID but last year things really stepped up so we’re hoping to build on that again.
“Our club day on (Saturday) should be good, it’s a great opportunity to get out there and have a run so we hope to see quite a few people at that.
“Then the Western Region series is probably the next level up from the club day; but in saying that anyone can have a go at it, it’s not limited to certain people so we encourage anyone to have a crack at that series.”
Nunn and Trickey both have kids involved in the sport and are keen to build on the club’s momentum from 2023.
“I’ve been involved since I was 16-years-old so it’s nice that it’s still going and to help out,” Nunn said.
“Taking over from the president last year ‘Watty’ (Leigh Watt), he did a great job and has been so good for the club so we just want to keep moving.
“Both mine and Jason’s kids are riding and that’s what it’s about. Juniors is where most of our memberships are.
“We just want kids to enjoy racing and if people turn up there is a lot of us around at the club days or the series and everyone is really helpful.”
Saturday’s club day and the Western Region Series are held at the club’s base at the Heywood Sports Park.
