Bunker shots

WITH the second round of the men’s championships complete, Wayne Riddle leads the Open/A grade section with 152, four shots clear of Graham Rentsch and Liam Powell 156, with Stuart McAdam in fourth spot on 157, Jason Chandler and John Hill on 159, and Mal Groves one shot further back on 160.

B grade is being headed by Stuart McAdam 157, with Chris Crane six shots off the pace on 163, Chris Eales 167, Martin Pitts 168, Jason McIntosh 169, and Mark O’Brien and Michael Holcombe 170.

C grade has Wayne Millard two shots ahead on 177 from Stephen Giles and Rob Vecchiet 179, and Guy Sevior and Nathan Caruana 180.

D grade is very close with Alan Oakley and Brendan Lang both on 200 with Graham Trounce on 202 and Doug Ward on 206.

Saturday

A FIELD of 76 men and 28 women contested Saturday’s stroke event, which was the Monthly Medal for the men.

Bruce Luhrs won with a very handy 68 nett, which was the second best on the day, trailing Coleraine Golf Club’s Nicholas Templeton who finished with 67 nett.

Templeton took out B grade from Luhrs, with Wayne Millard finishing on 69 nett to take third on a countback.

A grade was won by Mark O’Brien with 71 nett, ahead of Stuart McAdam 72 and Marten Chin 73 nett on a countback.

C grade went to Graham Trounce 75 nett, ahead of Neville Osborn 76 nett, and Doug Ward 80 nett on a countback.

Ball run down Stephen Giles 69 nett, Noel Jennings and Guy Sevior 70 nett, Andrew Bowman 71, Ross Murray 72, Shane Ryan and Chris Crane 73, Martin Pitts, Graham Rentsch, John Hill, Nathan Caruana and George McLean all 74 nett.

Nearest the pin and super pin on the third hole went to Wayne Riddle, the sixth went to Sevior, Templeton on the 13th, and Groves on the 16th.

The closest second shot on the ninth went to Hill and second shot on the 15th was won by Pitts.

Deirdre Simkin was the best in the women’s field finishing with 73 nett to sneak home one shot in front of Jo Forsyth 74 nett.

Balls down the line went to Enid Smith 75 nett, Chantal Butcher 76, Molly O’Brien, Di Raymond, Tania Cullinane, Sue Vickery and Cheryl Brinkmann all 77 nett.

Nearest the pin on third went to Jenny Fishburn, Raymond on the sixth, and O’Brien on the 16th.

Wednesday

A STROKE event for the women doubled as the first round of the championships, J Forsyth Trophy, monthly medal, and Veterans event.

The championships for the women can either be played on a Saturday or a Wednesday, but days had to be locked in prior to the event commencing.

Four women played their first round on Saturday which included reigning champion, Molly O’Brien, who finished with 81 off the stick.

This year there will be four grades Open/A grade 0-18 handicap, B grade 19-23, C grade 24-29 and D grade 30-54.

After Wednesday’s round there were some surprising results with some of our top lower markers not having the best of rounds, leaving Molly O’Brien sitting comfortably in top spot with 81, ahead of Venita Mibus 88, Robyn Holcombe 89, and Ath Archer 91.

B grade has last year’s champion, Raymond, in the lead with 91, followed by Vickery and Brinkmann both 96 and Rita Walkom rounding out the top placings on 98.

C grade is being headed by Pam Howell with 98, from Sue Bensch 100, Sally Warburton 102, Butcher and Jenny Edwards both on 104.

D grade saw Eileen Robertson have a great round to be leading with 113 from Helen Beattie 116 and Gillian Jenkins 118.

Next Wednesday and Saturday 16th March is the second round of the Championships for the women, with the final round for all players being played on March 17.

Winner of the Monthly Medal and A grade was Raymond on a countback from Venita Mibus, both finishing with 72 nett.

B grade was won by Howell 74 nett from Bensch 75 nett

C grade went to Robertson 73 nett from Val Linke 76 nett.

Balls down the line went to Robyn Holcombe 74, Walkom 75 and Debbie Milne 76 nett.

Nearest the pin on third hole was won by Milne, the sixth went to Bev Tyson, and the 16th was won by Sally Warburton.

The longest putt on the 13th went to Howell, with Mibus winning the putting with 28.

New player, Lisa Murphy, who has come through our beginner’s program won the final of the Doreen Fechner knockout match play last Monday.

The event was played over five rounds with Murphy playing Alma Fonda in the final and won, 6/5.

Upcoming events

DUE to the extreme weather conditions the 4BBB event which was scheduled for today has been postponed.

There is a men’s and women’s stableford event with tee off from the first hole from 7.30-9.30am. 

The final round of the club championships will be played next weekend, with men’s C and D grade playing their final round on March 16, and A and B grade men and A, B, C and D grade women playing their last round on March 17.

Hit them long and straight and enjoy the 19th hole.
