THE Portland BMX Club is set to host one of its biggest events in years across the weekend as the AusCycling State BMX Series round two and three hit Alexandra Park.
Over 400 riders are registered for tomorrow and another 400 plus riders hitting the track on Sunday for a huge weekend of racing.
While a plethora of local talent is hitting the track, there will also be riders who are world-ranked on show on both days.
Committee member Maddy Sutton said it is one of the club’s biggest events they have hosted for a long time.
“We’ve got over 430 riders for Saturday and more than 410 for Sunday so it’s going to be very, very big,” she said.
“Once you add in partners, parents and other kids there’ll be upwards of a crowd of about 2000 in and out – it’s just massive.
“It’s been quite a while since we hosted a big event like this and that was probably around late 2018 so we’re really excited.”
In order to be awarded a state series event, the club has to meet track regulations which Sutton said has meant a lot of work in the lead up to the event.
“There are a lot of standards that the track has to meet so over the past few months there have been a lot of days out on the track to get it up to the level it needs to be,” she said.
It has been completely resurfaced and is looking smick at the minute, we had some riding on it on Wednesday night and it’s in the best condition it’s been in for years.”
At least 30 Portland BMX Club riders are registered for tomorrow and 27 for Sunday, giving local competitors a chance to test out their skills against some of the best.
“It’s really great for our local kids to get exposure at an event like this and not have to travel,” she said.
“Most of these events are held in Melbourne or on the outskirts of Melbourne so to have one this close to home, or actually at home, is just great.
“It also gives them a chance to test out their riding against some of the best riders in the state, in Australia and in the world.”
Anyone is welcome to attend the event with the club putting in contingencies for spectators and riders due to the expected warm weather.
Tomorrow’s racing kicks off at 3pm until around 7pm while racing on Sunday begins at 11am.
