THE Southern 500 Speedway wasn’t going to let hot weather get in the way of one of the biggest weekends on its calendar, with the track lighting up once more across Saturday and Sunday with a number of major events on show.
Saturday’s event, headlined by the Wingless Sprints, was altered slightly to accommodate for the heat, with the start of the evening delayed until 6pm and each driver given just two heats before the final.
The A Main final saw Mount Gambier’s Mitchell Broome take out top spot, with second placed Christopher Temby less than half a second behind him while Blake Walsh came in third.
Sunday saw both the senior and junior Formula 500s on track, in what was a more pleasant day for racing as the weather had cooled off considerably.
In the senior final it was Dale Sinclair who came in top place closely followed by Dylan Willsher and Jake Hose, while local talent Angus Hollis had a solid outing as he came in fourth place.
In the juniors it was Hugo Chivell who came out on top followed by Charlie Bowen and Rusty Ponting.
Speedway secretary Hannah Carter said it was a great couple of days for the club despite the hot weather putting a dampener on the crowds on Saturday.
“We didn’t get the numbers we would’ve liked on Saturday, but that’s to be expected with the weather,” Carter said.
“But the second night picked up a fair bit, the cooler weather I think helped a lot and it ended up being a really good night for the club.”
Carter said in addition to the headlining events it was great to see their usual junior event back out on the track once again.
“It’s a great way for them to get involved, and helps prepare them for their future with speedway,” she said.
“They also build friendships with one another through their racing, it’s a great way for them to get to know one another.”
The speedway has one last event on its calendar, which will see the Sprintcars return to the track for their Victorian Title on April 6.
