PORTLAND’S women’s and division one men’s side will have their first home clashes of the season tomorrow when they face off against Warrnambool Rangers and Corangamite respectively at Friendly Society Reserve.
For both teams it will be a chance to make a great start even better, with the men coming off a 3-2 win back in round one at Port Fairy before a bye in round two.
A quirk in the fixturing means the women are set to face the Rangers for the second time in three weeks to start the season, but they certainly won’t be complaining as they won the first clash 7-3.
Sunday’s performance proved this was no fluke for the new side, as they defeated Corangamite 5-0 with both captain Imogen Pratt and young gun Jasmine Siemon scoring a pair of goals.
Both Pratt and coach Zeke Hatten stressed after their win over the Rangers that they had faced a depleted side without rotations, which was perhaps demonstrated by the 4-0 scoreline in the second half.
Meanwhile, division one men’s coach Dylan Murray said the bye in round two acted as a bit of a “tease” for the group after their round one win.
“To play round one and then sit on the sideline and watch the reserves game last weekend, I think it’s got everyone pretty keen to go,” Murray said.
“We’re looking like a pretty strong side and hopefully Sunday is another chance to show that.”
Murray admitted he wasn’t sure exactly what to expect from Corangamite having not played against them since 2022, but said he expected his side to be able to use the size of the pitch to their advantage.
“They play on a relatively small pitch whereas ours is quite large… our fitness overall is quite high and we’re looking to utilise width this season in attack.
“We’ve placed a pretty big emphasis on building up from the back so that’s what I’m expecting us to try and do.”
Portland’s division one matchup with the Lions will get underway will begin at 3.15pm, while kick off in the women’s game is at noon.
