Mixed fortunes for locals

MILLY Tapper has farewelled the Olympics for the last time after the Australian women’s team went down to Chinese Taipei, 0-3, on Monday night.

Tapper played alongside Michelle Bromley and Minhyung Lee, with both losing in three.

The Hamilton local, competing in her last Olympics, pushed the game against Szu-yu Chen out to five rubbers, 11-6, 5-11, 11-9, 9-11, and 6-11.

It comes after the 34-year-old also lost her women’s singles round of 64 clash to Republic of Korea’s Yubin Shin earlier in the games.

Tapper’s Paris campaign isn’t over though, with the Paralympics getting underway later this month.

It was a more positive outing for south-west Javelin thrower, Kathryn Mitchell, who qualified for the final.

Mitchell threw 62.4m in the group stage, needing at least 62 metres to automatically qualify for Sunday morning’s (3.30am AEST) final.

The 42-year-old will be out to improve on her sixth place finish at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, and her ninth place finish at London 2012.
