Surprising results recorded, as top teams build gap

WEEKEND Pennant games were played on Saturday, with some surprising results recorded across the four divisions.

Division 1

PENSHURST cemented itself in second spot after a 81-49 win against Memorial saw the home side collect 14 points from the clash.

Alaister Rentsch rolled up 23 shots to Chris Bramley’s 21, Phillip Allen put the result beyond doubt with a 40-8 win against Desmond Pitts, while Ian Grayson gave Portland a rink win and two points following his defeat of David Cook, 20-18.

Grangeburn returned from Casterton with just one point after a 52-82 loss.

Leah McCabe and Neil Shannon each rolled up 23 to split the two points, before Trevor Partington fell to Andrew Alderton, 21-23, and Ken Prewett was outclassed by Garry Russell, 8-36.

Balmoral travelled south to take on Hamilton and finished with 14 points after collecting a 76-46 win.

Peter Merryfull defeated Norm Pech, 32-11, while Derek Brody had a tougher contest, holding off Robert Thornton, 25-15.

Peter Graham gave Hamilton something to celebrate with a 20-19 win against Daniel Brody.

Portland hosted Heywood and made good use of home greens, winning 68-52 to claim two rink wins and the overall victory.

Lindsay Gruar rolled up 27 to Mick Swan’s 14, and Michael Jennings accounted for Mick Hogan, 22-17, but Ken Woolley’s 21-19 win against Barry Jennings prevented the clean sweep.

Division 2

MACARTHUR claimed maximum points at home against the visiting Coleraine side with a 47-31 win.

Clifton Tonissen finished with 28 shots to account for Steven Cooper’s 13, while Frank Pye edged out Bruce Armstrong, 19-18, in a thrilling finish.

Hamilton Gold claimed local bragging rights after travelling to Grangeburn and claiming a 41-32 victory.

Wayne Rigby started well for the home side, rolling up 17 to hold off John Forsyth by two shots, before Michael Pech claimed a 26-15 win to give the visitors overall honours.

Memorial Red travelled north to take on Hamilton and took all 14 points back home after a 61-24 result.

Gregory Dobbin made light work of the clash against Heather McIntyre, winning 37-7, before Ronald Robinson rolled up 24 shots to account for Alan Crane’s 17.

Portland got the better of Memorial Blue, 35-31 and collected 12 of the 14 points on offer.

Alan Warburton’s 24-12 win against Peter Fasoli was critical to the overall result, as Richard Speers fell to Blue’s Robert Hamblin, 11-19 in the other rink.

Division 3

HAMILTON Green has moved up into second spot after claiming all possible points at home against Grangeburn, winning 52-34.

Rhonda Dunbar rolled up 22 shots to Peter Moore’s 13, while Cliff Brinkman accounted for Dean Jenkins with a 30-21 result.

Hamilton remains in top spot despite conceding all 14 points to the visiting Dartmoor side, losing 26-42.

Raymond Fary’s 13 was well short of Peter Holmes’ 23, while Tom Storer also only managed 13, as Ross Kerr rolled up 19 to complete the clean sweep.

Penshurst hosted Portland and the visitors took the full swag of points back south after the 47-35 win.

Lionel Shelton finished with 25 to win by 10 against John King, while Andrew Smail had a much closer result, edging out Barry King, 22-20.

Memorial accounted for Heywood, winning 47-39.

Gary Milich collected a 27-16 win against Coral Stephens, while Martin McKeever’s 20 was just shy of Desmond Stuchbery’s 23, giving Heywood two points.

Division 4

THE four match-ups saw the rinks go each way, starting with the Macarthur and Grangeburn clash, with the latter returning home with just two points after the 42-45 result.

Wendy Colcott gave the visitors a sniff of overall victory with a 30-11 win against Carole Dunn, while Beverley Casey’s 12 wasn’t enough against Anne Gilmour’s 34.

Penshurst hosted Portland and only kept two points, going down 32-36.

Neil Manning notched up a 17-13 win against Naomi Pye, before Michael Cameron only managed 15 shots to go down by eight shots to Myra Bourke.

Balmoral travelled to Hamilton and it was the home side which kept 12 points, courtesy of Ray Downes’ 29-12 victory against Mark Staude.

Graeme Langsworth only managed 14 shots in the other rink against Balmoral’s Murray McInnes.

Casterton was at home for the final match-up of the round, hosting Coleraine and claiming 12 of the 14 points on offer with a 43-35 victory.
