YOUNG Hamilton athlete, Angus Ewing, has taken to the sport of track and field like a duck to water, as he has earned a place in Victorian team that will contest the 2024 Australian All Schools Athletics Championships in December.
Ewing has only participated in the sport for the last 12 months, but in that time, he has qualified for the Victorian All Schools Championships which were held recently in Melbourne at Lakeside Stadium at the end of October and the national titles in Brisbane.
He has taken to the throwing events, Discuss and Shot Put, where he has claimed the gold medal at state level in the Under-16 Boys for Discuss with a throw of 56.63m, and a bronze medal in the Under-16 Boys Shot Put with 15.38m.
The youngster achieved these distances less than a week after competing at the State Track and Field Secondary State Championships in the Under-15 Boys age group, with throws of 57.78m for the Discuss and 14.19m in the Shot Put, which were good enough to claim first place and third place respectively.
“I have been selected for Victoria to throw the Discuss, but I’m also the emergency for the Shot Put,” Ewing said.
“It’s great that I get to represent Victoria and wear the uniform, I can’t wait.
Ewing is under the mentorship of coach, Mark Jansz, and after attending training in Warrnambool he is given tasks to work on until the next session.
“I work on the advice Mark tells me when I see him, three to four times a week at home,” he said.
Like all other sports people his age (14), he has yet to settle on a number one sport that he purely concentrates on.
“I don’t have a number one sport at the moment, I enjoy throwing, football and basketball,” Ewing said.
“I have only been competing in throwing for 12 months; to get to this level so fast it hasn’t given me much time to think about what is next.”
The national championships will be held at the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre (the same stadium that the 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games were held in).
